ABSTRACT.
This study analyses variability and trends of atmospheric evaporative demand (AED) across Uruguay in the past four decades. Changes were assessed using pan evaporation measurements from 10 meteorological stations and compared to PenPan model calculations, which is a physically based model that employs meteorological data as input. Results demonstrate a high agreement between the observed AED and those estimated from the PenPan model. Both observations and model estimations agree on a high interannual variability in AED, though being statistically insignificant (p>0.05) at seasonal and annual scales. Given that AED shows high sensitivity to changes in relative humidity and sunshine duration, as a surrogate of solar radiation, the lack of significant trends in the AED observations and estimations over Uruguay can be linked to the insignificant trend found for these climate variables for the period from 1973 to 2014. This is the first study that reports Pan evaporation trends for this part of the world, helping to infill gaps for mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere areas, which are
poorly represented in Pan evaporation trends.

Basándose en los antecedentes y en la inexistencia de semilla mejorada de P. taeda para las condiciones locales, el Programa Nacional Forestal del INIA elaboró el proyecto titulado “Desarrollo de una raza local de Pinus taeda adaptada a las condiciones agroecológicas del Uruguay”. Este proyecto fue financiado por el Programa de Desarrollo Tecnológico (PDT) del Ministerio de Educación y Cultura y se ejecutó entre Enero de 2003 y Diciembre de 2004. El objetivo general del proyecto fue obtener una raza local de P. taeda de la cual se pueda obtener semilla en el menor tiempo posible. Para lograr esto, los objetivos específicos fueron: 1) identificación de al menos 150 árboles plus en plantaciones comerciales de todo el país; 2) establecimiento de un huerto semillero clonal a partir de la clonación de los árboles plus seleccionados y 3) instalación de tres pruebas de progenie de los árboles plus seleccionados. En la presente publicación se reportan los resultados finales obtenidos en el proyecto. El informe se divide en cinco partes que se corresponden con las actividades realizadas para el cumplimiento de los objetivos planteados: selección de árboles plus, cosecha y procesamiento de semillas, instalación de las pruebas de progenie, propagación vegetativa de los árboles plus y establecimiento del huerto semillero clonal. Para cada actividad se presentan los antecedentes, la metodología empleada y los resultados obtenidos. |
